We invite graduates to submit your profile for the 'Where are they now – Grads on the move' section for the next edition of the DCU Times magazine in 2008.

This is an ideal way of advertising your career, company or enterprise to the 30,000 strong alumni association.

If you would like your profile to be included, email a paragraph with your career details to date to alumni@dcu.ie by Friday February 1st. You are also welcome to submit a recent photo of yourself (at a high resolution at least 300 dpi) or send the photo to the Alumni Office, Albert College, DCU, Dublin 9 and it will be returned to you after publication.

DCU mourns the passing of Paddy Wright

DCU has learned with great sadness of the passing away of Dr Paddy Wright, former Chair of the DCU Educational Trust. The President of the university, Professor Ferdinand von Prondzynski, said: 'Paddy Wright was an exceptionally gifted businessman who gave generously of his time and expertise to support DCU at a critical time in its development. His leadership of the DCU Educational Trust helped the university to develop its campus and its activities and made a major contribution to our growing international status. We shall miss him greatly, and we extend our sincere condolences to his family at this time'.


Irish Alumni New Year's Party, London, 22 January 2008

Dublin City University is the youngest and most dynamic Irish university with an Alumni Association of over 30,000 graduates throughout Ireland and in chapters around the world. The DCU Educational Trust seeks an innovative and energetic leader for the position of Alumni Relations Officer.

The holder of the post is responsible for developing initiatives to promote and foster high quality life-long relationships between DCU and its alumni. The Alumni Relations Officer coordinates the Alumni office and manages alumni volunteers, programmes, events and services, meeting the needs of DCU graduates and further strengthening the DCU Alumni community. Based in the DCU Educational Trust, a charitable foundation serving the university, the Alumni Relations Officer will actively collaborate with offices across DCU.

Candidate Profile: The right candidate will be educated to degree standard and have excellent networking, communications and organisational skills and will be a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual with great attention to detail.

Salary will be commensurate with experience.

Abbott Ireland Vacancy

Technical Specialist

Abbott Ireland Diagnostics Division was established in Sligo in 1994 and currently employs over 500 staff. We manufacture diagnostic detection kits for Hepatitis, HIV, Hep/Retro products and Cancer markers.

We are currently recruiting for Technical Specialist(s) with in our Scientific Services Department where you will be responsible for providing product technical support to manufacturing operations and may be involved in product transfer, development and improvement projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Working the manufacturing team to identify, document, and remedy the cause of product non-conformance in compliance with site CA/PA system requirements
  • Ensure that the plant meets the quality requirements of its customers, internal quality systems, internal & external auditors and other external agencies.
  • Assist in product development/improvement projects.
  • Design and manage process improvement projects and validations.
  • Update statistical process control charts and circulate information, highlighting any issues identified

Education and Experience:

    • You will have completed a relevant post-graduate qualification (Msc or PhD) in one of the following science disciplines - Immunology, Biochemistry or Biotechnology
      OR:
    • You will have a third level qualification in a relevant life science discipline, plus two to five years experience in a relevant manufacturing/ technical role in a regulated environment. Experience in the development or support of immunodiagnostic assays an advantage.

    Experience in the following areas would be an advantage:

    • Experience in conducting investigations
    • Technical support and troubleshooting experience

    Key Skills:

    • Exposure to a wide range of scientific techniques.
    • Advanced organizational skills and attention to detail.
    • The ability to use your initiative when faced with an obstacle, while adhering to the quality system, is essential.
    • The ability to work co-operatively and effectively with others to establish and maintain good working relationships.
    • The highest levels of integrity in the successful completion of your work.
    • The ability to represent the operations department on cross-functional teams and to establish and maintain good working relationships.
