Leading
DCU researchers receive Presidents Award
DCUs highest research distinction, the Presidents Research
Award, has this year gone to two leading academics, Dr Colum Kenny from
the School of Communications and Professor Richard OKennedy, School
of Biotechnology. The President of DCU, Professor Ferdinand von Prondzynski,
presented the research awards at a ceremony in February. The event was
attended by Dr Barry McSweeney, Irelands Government
Science Advisor.
The Awards recognise academics for outstanding research carried out in
the field of Science and Engineering and also in Humanities and Social
Sciences. DCU academics are invited to nominate candidates for the Awards,
who are then judged on the following criteria: national and international
prominence, the relevance of their research, and the degree of excellence
they have achieved in their specific area.
Dr Kenny received the Humanities and Social Sciences Award. He received
his award for his wide-ranging achievements in legal history, local history
and media policy. Dr Kennys most recently completed work is on the
issue of conflict and reconciliation.
Professor Kennedy received the Engineering and Science Award. He has
played a prominent role in the development of the university since the
early 80s and his research in the field of immunology, in particular
antibody production and applications, is internationally recognised.
