School of Biotechnology

Research Programmes

The School of Biotechnology is an active centre of basic and applied research. Principal investigators within the School have established collaborative links with both national and international research laboratories and have been very successful in attracting funding from many external sources including: Science Foundation Ireland, Health Research Board of Ireland, European Union (FP7), Wellcome Trust, HEA (PRTLI), World Health Organisation, Environmental Protection Agency, Embark-IRCSET, Enterprise Ireland, Irish Cancer Society, EMBO, Department of Agriculture, Teagasc and industrial partners.

Researchers in the School also work in close collaboration with various DCU-based “National Centres of Excellence”. These include: (i) The Centre for Bioanalytical Research (CBAS), a unique academia-industry collaboration created to resolve key problems within research-intensive bioindustries; (ii) The National Institute for Cellular Biotechnology (NICB ), dedicated to development of targeted research programmes in key areas relating to identification of new therapeutic targets and diagnostic methods for disease (in particular for cancer, microbial diseases and diabetes); and (iii) The National Centre for Sensor Research (NCSR), a multidisciplinary research facility focused on the development of chemical and biological sensors for medical diagnostics, food quality assurance and environmental monitoring. The School also works in close collaboration with a number of University Designated Research Centres (UDRCs). These include the Centre for Preventive Medicine (CPM), the Centre for Scientific Computing and Complex Systems Modelling (Sci-Sym), and the International Centre for Neurotherapeutics (ICNT).
