Dr. Killard completed his primary degree in Microbiology in 1993 at Trinity College, Dublin and his PhD in Biotechnology at Dublin City University in 1998 under Professor Richard O'Kennedy, BSc, PhD. To date he has earned a host of awards from university and other national bodies. He was once winner and once runner up of the Irish Times/Yamanouchi/Royal Irish Academy science writing competition, and a finalist in the 1998 RDS Science Communication Forum. He began his postdoctoral research in February 1998 under Professor Malcolm Smyth, BSc, PhD, DSc, in the School of Chemical Sciences, Dublin City University, where he continued the application of antibodies in biosensor strategies under the Strategic Research Grant ST/97/505.
In October 1999, he was awarded a three-year assistant lectureship in analytical chemistry in the School of Chemical Sciences, DCU. He continued research in immunosensor technology and other sensor formats, while also expanding his range of analytical skills into the separation sciences. His teaching was in the areas of biosensors and analytical instrumentation. He also taught Anatomy and Physiology to the nursing school. Dr. Killard obtained grant funding from the Royal Society of Chemistry and Enterprise Ireland totalling IR£66,000 in 2000 to continue research into immunosensor technologies.
Dr. Killard was offered the position of Development Scientist with Inverness Medical Ltd. (now Inverness Medical Innovations Inc.) and commenced employment in September 2000 where developed immunosensor systems for them and their daughter company Cambridge Diagnostics, Galway until returning to DCU as a research fellow in January 2004. He has devoted the last five years of his research career to developing electrochemical immunosensor systems.
