development education conference 2006
development cooperation ireland (dci) third level conference 2006 (hosted by dublin city university)
Call for papers
Linking the Global and the Local: Education for Development in a Globalising World
Abstracts are invited of papers to be offered at the DCI development education conference to be held in DCU on March 23rd (evening) and 24th (daytime) 2006.
Rationale
Development Cooperation Ireland (DCI) in the Department of Foreign Affairs is the Irish Government’s official programme of assistance to developing countries. As part of its commitment to promote development education in universities and other third-level institutions in Ireland and to facilitate contacts and networking between both third-level development education practitioners and academics working in the field of international development, DCI every two years sponsors a conference on aspects of development. Papers reflecting the latest research and practice in development education (theory, practice, methodologies) and in international development issues are presented.
Following the success of such conferences in Mary Immaculate College, Limerick (2002), and in University College, Cork (2004), the Centre for International Studies at Dublin City University is hosting the next conference, to take place on 23rd and 24th March, 2006. Its theme ‘Linking the Global and the Local: Education for Development in a Globalising World’, is intended to reflect one of the major challenges for development education today, namely how to mediate between global processes and the livelihood needs of people at local level. Whether through the practice of development education or by introducing issues of international development into the curricula of third-level institutions, bridging the gaps of understanding and commitment between the local and the global is now a central challenge for educators.
Topics
Papers are therefore invited on topics related to the conference theme, including health, education, technology, the media, economics, politics, languages, international relations, culture, law, HIV/AIDS, the digital divide, state, governance, environment, international debt, human security, trade, aid, militarisation, regionalism, food and agriculture, multinational corporations, human rights, poverty and inequality, civil society, gender, migration, the Millennium Development Goals, consumerism, population, children, representations of the Other, and Ireland’s role and responsibility. Papers on educational practice and methodology related to the conference theme are particularly invited and it is hoped to have sessions devoted to development education.
It is hoped that scholars from a wide range of disciplines, including the natural sciences, humanities, law, the social sciences, education, medicine, technology, engineering and the health sciences, will offer papers. Interdisciplinary papers are also welcome.

There will be a special welcome for participation by scholars working in countries of the South. A limited number of bursaries for presenters of papers from the South whose abstracts are accepted will be made available.
