Travel Information

Please note that Ireland is NOT part of the Schengen Agreement, and this may have an impact on your trip as you will need to pass through passport control.

Visa information, for those requiring visas, is listed below.

All of the information you need to apply for a visa is available from the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service website, but for your benefit we have summarised the steps as follows:

A) You can check whether you need a visa at the following link (essentially, if you are from a state which is NOT listed in Schedule 1, then you MUST have a visa to attend the conference); http://www.inis.gov.ie/en/INIS/Pages/Do_I_need_a_Visa

B) Information on the type of visa required is available at the following link (which also contains links to other relevant information); http://www.inis.gov.ie/en/INIS/Pages/Type_of_Visa

C) In order to apply for a visa, you must first complete the online application, and then send the supporting documentation to the Irish Embassy closest to you.
(A list of Irish embassies is available here)

The online application can be found here, together with full instructions in English and a number of other languages.

You may need the following information to complete this step:

  1. Passport and details of any previous passports – number, date of issue/expiry
  2. Details of any previous Irish visa applications
  3. Contact details for your host in Ireland
  4. Itinerary

D) Once you complete this step, you will be able to print out your application, and submit it to the Irish Embassy together with the following documents (together with items such as your passport, photos, application fee etc. which are listed in the application):

  1. An invitation letter from the conference organisers, which will include our contact details
  2. Information on finances – if your attendance is being funded by your university, you must furnish a letter stating this, or alternatively you must show that you have sufficient funds to support yourself for the duration of the conference
  3. A letter from your university stating that you are attending the conference and that you are expected to return in order to continue your studies
  4. A travel itinerary, which should include flight details, accommodation information, and details of travel medical insurance
  5. A signed letter of undertaking, stating that you will adhere to the conditions of the visa and return to your country of study when the conference has finished
  6. Finally, if you are living in another EU country you may be asked to show a valid visa for that country
