High Performance Gym
Our state of the art High Performance Gym is designed to assist and develop elite athletes providing an effective solution to their every training need. Thereby helping them to achieve their targets through sports specific training. DCU Sport is where sportspeople prepare to win.
The High Performance Gym iso-lateral Hammer Strength equipment that works individual muscle groups, as well as power racks, half racks and Smith machines with over 1 tonne of weight plates. Within this gym there is also a substantial free weights area including barbells and dumbbells from 2 kg to 60 kg.
Coaching Consultancy
DCU Sport provides a service to help maximize a coaches specificity of training. Specificity is a key principle of training to ensure that players and athletes are training in a manner that will optimize the transfer from the training ground to the competitive environment.
Background
DCU Sport has developed strong relations with a wide range of organisations and clubs of varying standards. From the elite with Irish Rowing, Bohemians F.C., Dublin GAA, Irish Table-Tennis, Athletics Ireland, DCU Mercy/Saints Basketball and Tennis Ireland to the club level with Finglas Rugby, St. Vincent’s GAA and DCU Soccer. Our aim is further develop our current elite athlete profile while staying true to our “Sport for All” policy by catering for the keen amateur sportsperson.
Plyometrics & SAQ
There is an area for plyometrics and SAQ training. Plyometric exercise is one of the best ways to improve power with actions that can be carried out in a sports specific manner.
SAQ training involves explosive, multi-directional exercises to train and improve speed, agility and quickness of the participant thereby optimising athletic performance.
Core Training
The Transverse Abdominis, a deep abdominal muscle, can often be excluded from other exercise classes and programmes
despite its significance. Recommended by sports scientists, core training will improve posture, lumbar stabilisation and help prevent injuries.
Spinning
Spinning takes place on a special stationary bike, which stimulates all the experiences of outdoor cycling indoors. Spinning is perfect for any fitness enthusiast and a great way to group train. A spin class can be designed specifically for your team to incorporate aerobic, anaerobic or interval training.
Ice Baths
Our ice baths provide a form of cryotherapy treatment, which is a powerful tool for managing musculo-skeletal fatigue, particularly for recovery and rehabilitation.
Sport Science Support
DCU Sport is acutely aware of the needs of the 21st Century athlete which is evident from the sport science support provided by its staff. Athletes and coaches can receive individual or group sessions from qualified sport scientists to deal with issues such as fitness testing, (analysis & interpretation), strength & conditioning, nutrition, hydration, recovery sessions, injury rehab, competition preparation, sleep strategies, travel planning and acclimatisation concerns.
It is our aim to provide an environment for individual athletes and teams to maximise their potential in terms of pre-season training, in-season training, pre-match preparation or post-match recovery.
