James M. Flaherty Visiting Professor from DCU on visit to HEC Montréal

Dr. Janine Bosak is a Senior Lecturer in Organisational Psychology and Director of Research at the Leadership and Talent Institute of Dublin City University. One of her key areas of research focuses on employee wellbeing and organizational performance. Currently, she is visiting HEC Montreal, one of the leading Business Schools in Canada, as a James M. Flaherty Visiting Professor. During her visit, Dr. Bosak is researching approaches to reducing the costs of burnout for individuals, patient care and hospital performance using data from hospitals in Canada and Ireland. Burnout is a growing concern in the health care sector which is often caused by heavy patient loads, high stress levels, and understaffing in hospitals. Consequences of burnout among hospital staff are turnover, lower patient satisfaction, inappropriate medications by physicians and health-care associated infections, ultimately contributing to lower performance of health care organisations. Understanding the drivers of employee wellbeing that help hospital staff to strive and be healthy in their work environment is thus critical and will facilitate the design of interventions aimed at all levels of the organization. Further, Dr. Bosak gave a presentation entitled ‘Employee Attitudes and Hospital Performance: The Role of Employee Involvement Climate and Climate Strength’ to faculty members and PhD students from the HRM and Management groups. Dr. Bosak is being hosted by Professor Denis Chenevert, Professor in Human Resource Management, and Professor Lucie Morissette, Department Chair of the Human Resource Management Group at HEC Montreal. This visit marks the continuation of a very fruitful and productive collaboration with Professor Denis Chenevert who spent his sabbatical leave at Dublin City University in 2012.
