Academic biography

Paul King is an Assistant Professor in the School of Human Development and former Chair of the MSc. in Guidance Counselling programme which he established in 2007. He also lectures on the Postgraduate Masters in Education (PME). Paul is a qualified guidance counsellor, second level teacher and school chaplain and has worked in schools in the North and South of Ireland for 15 years. 

Paul is currently an appointee of the Minister of Education and Skills since 2013 as Chair of the Management of Guidance Committee, National Centre for Guidance in Education (NCGE). He is an academic consultant for the Irish Defence Forces for the education and training of Defence Force instructors and has recently successfully tendered for the delivery of a level 9 postgraduate diploma in guidance counselling for the education and training of DF members as professional guidance counsellors. 

With colleagues from the University of Limerick he was co-principal investigator on an Irish Research Council funded project case study published in 2017 on a whole school approach to guidance counselling provision in second level schools. He is currently leading with colleagues from the Institute of Education here in DCU a HEA funded project 2015-2019 on supporting Equity of Access to Higher Education Programme (PATH Project) to promote equity of access to Initial Teacher Education (ITE).

Paul is a continuous student with the Centre for Mindfulness, University of Massachusetts Medical School, USA engaged in ongoing professional training as a mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR) teacher. He has delivered a number of Mindfulness Based Intervention (MBI) programmes in education and workplace settings and is currently completing PhD studies on the design, implementation and evaluation of MBI’s in education and training contexts.
