safety in the university

All students are advised to familiarise themselves with University safety regulations and students must satisfy themselves that they are fully aware of escape routes from buildings and the positions of fire equipment. All students should, for example, check the following details and, if in doubt, problems should be clarified with a member of the Safety Committee or with individual lecturers:

  • the position of the fire alarm points in your area;
  • the position of the fire extinguishers in your area and how to operate them (it is important to report if fire extinguishers are missing, obstructed, apparatus damaged or out of order);
  • the position of fire hoses and how to operate them;
  • the nearest exits and the routes to them (it is important to report any locked exit door, a break glass unit without a key or an exit door/corridor/stairway obstructed);
  • your Assembly Point if the building has to be evacuated in an emergency (if you do not know this, check with the Safety Officer or lecturer in your area);
  • check instructions `In Case of Fire' which should be displayed in your area;
  • check the position of main gas and electrical controls in laboratories, etc.;
  • check for other hazards (e.g. rubbish in corridors, under stairs, bicycles blocking exits, etc.);
  • read the Universitys' Safety Statement which is available from all Schools and Units and from the Students' Union.
