Dr Anne Matthews
Biographical Details:
I have been working at DCU since 2001. I qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1990 and a Registered Midwife in 1992. I graduated from University College Dublin with a first class honours B.Soc.Sc. in 1995 and with a M.Sc. (Econ.) in Social Policy and Planning from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 1996. I worked in the Department of Social Policy and Social Work in UCD, the Centre for Social Research of the University of Malawi, Central Africa and as Chief Officer for the Council for Children's Hospitals' Care until taking up a research position at DCU in July 2001 as Research Fellow, on a Research Project om Empowerment of nurses and midwives. I was a Lecturer in Nursing and Health Policy from February 2003- 2004 and since then am a Lecturer in Nursing. I have a PhD from DCU in 2006; my thesis was entitled "Past and present perspectives on power and empowerment in midwifery in Ireland".
Research Interests:
Empowerment in midwifery; Health in developing countries; Systematic reviews of pregnancy childbirth interventions; the use of traditional medicines in pregnancy and childbirth; Social Policy, particularly Health Policy; nurse and midwife workforce planning.
