Dr Aoife Morrin
Biographical Details:
Aoife Morrin studied Applied Sciences at Dublin Institute of Technology and graduated in 2000. She obtained her PhD in electroanalytical chemistry in 2004 at Dublin City University (DCU). Following her PhD she gained post-doctoral experience both at the National Centre for Sensor Research at DCU and the University of Wollongong, Australia. On completion of her post-doctoral fellowship, she took up an academic position in the School of Chemical Sciences at DCU as lecturer in Environmental and Analytical Science in 2008. Here, she has an active research group, currently consisting of 5 members, in multi-disciplinary areas including functional (nano)materials, electrochemical sensor platforms for point-of-care diagnostics and environmental analysis, microfluidics for chromatographic applications and ink formulation and printing to enable and drive the area of printed electronics.
Research Interests:
Dr. Morrin's field of research encompasses electroanalytical device development for environmental and biomedical applications. Specifically, her work entails developing materials with improved performances due, for example, to nanostructuring or via compositing. Materials of interest include conducting polymers and nanomaterials thereof, carbon nanotubes and metallics. One of the challenges of her research is to fabricate conductive nanostructures comprising these materials in microfluidic channels for use as dynamic chromatographic phases, flow-through sensors, switching valves, etc. Printed electronics is another area where Dr. Morrin has active research underway. She has extensive experience in screen- and inkjet- printing of functional materials including processable conducting polymer formulations, carbon nanotubes and a range of other nanomaterials. Printing of these materials onto disposable electrode platforms for fabrication of sensing devices have been shown to have unique behaviours and are already being applied to several specialised sensing applications spanning areas such as urea biosensing and ammonia refridgerant monitoring. Hybrid material fabrication is another specific aspect of Dr. Morrins research. Through combining organic and inorganic functional materials, it will serve to enrich their respective properties and widen the application scope offered by each of them individually. There is an emphasis in this research on tailoring these innovative materials to meet `ink¿ properties; thereby enabling their suitability for printing-based fabrication of electronic devices. Printable organic/metal systems will have significant potential for a range of electronic applications. Fundamental studies into these materials are vital, as there is constant demand for pioneering, novel materials throughout the full spectrum of scientific research.
