Biographical Details:

Dr Jennifer Bruen is Research Convenor and a Lecturer in German in SALIS. She has a primary degree in the field of business and language and higher degrees in the fields of political education, eastern Germany and language teaching and learning. She lectures and researches in these fields and is happy to supervise postgraduate students in many of them. Jenny was awarded the DCU President's Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning in 2003, the European Label for Innovation in Teaching and Learning in 2006, and is currently involved at a European (Committee if the Regions, ENLU network) and national (RIA, IRAAL) level in the development of language policy and the promotion of multilingualism and European citizenship.

Research Interests:

Research interests primarily in the field of applied linguistics: They include in particular language planning and policy at national and EU level, aspects of foreign language acquisition and language teaching and learning, in particular, the role of language learning strategies in the language learning process and the study of individual learner differences, in particular preferred learning styles, autonomy and motivation. Related areas of interest include Teaching German as a Foreign Language (DAF), preparation of students for a year abroad, the European Language portfolio initiative and German for international business. Additional interests include political and citizenship education in the EU particularly in Germany (East and West) and in Ireland.
