Biographical Details:

Michael Doherty graduated from Trinity College Dublin with an LL.B and from Queen's College, Cambridge with an LL.M. He attended the Honourable Society of Kings' Inns and was called to the Irish Bar in October 2002. His PhD on Irish Trade Union Membership was awarded by Trinity College Dublin. He has lectured in DCU since 2004, primarily on Employment Law and EU Law. He was Director of Undergraduate Studies in the School of Law and Government from 2007-2010. He is currently Head of the Law Group in the School and Director of the Socio-Legal Research Centre. He served as President of the Irish Association of Law Teachers from 2010-2011.

Research Interests:

Dr Doherty's research interests are in the areas of employment and labour law, industrial relations (especially the role of trade unions) and social partnership. He has published widely in national and international journals on these topics and is a frequent media contributor on labour market issues. He is co-author of Principles of Irish Employment Law (published in 2010 by Clarus Press). He is also a National Rapporteur on Employment Law to the International Academy of Comparative Law and is currently working as the national expert for Ireland on two European Commission projects relating to the proposed revision of the Posting of Workers Directive. Dr Doherty has supervised a recently completed PhD on comparative trade union responses to migrant labour and is currently supervising PhD research on Irish trade union policies in relation to migrant work. He welcomes applications from prospective LLM by Research or PhD students in any area of employment or industrial relations law and practice.
