Biographical Details:

Frank Smyth received the B.Eng from Dublin City University in 2001. He received the M.Eng (by research), also from Dublin City University in 2003 for work on radio over fiber systems. Following an 18 month period during which he worked as an IT consultant in Sydney, Australia he returned to Ireland in 2005 to undertake his PhD studies. His PhD work was funded through the multidisciplinary Centre for Telecommunications Value Chain research, one of Science Foundation Ireland¿s Centres for Science, Engineering and Technology (CSET). The topic of his research was reconfigurable optical networks. In 2006 he spent six weeks working with Bell Laboratories in New Jersey, USA and in 2007 he was awarded a Bell Labs Summer Internship and invited to spend a further six months working on reconfigurable optical mesh networks within the Optical Networks Research Department at Bell Labs. Dr. Smyth completed his PhD in Sept 2008 and in 2009 he took up a position as a Postdoctoral Researcher with the Radio and Optical Communications Group at Dublin City University where he is currently co-supervising two PhD students. He spearheaded DCUs involvement in the GreenTouch consortium and recieved over ¿20,000 in funding to support this activity. His current research interests include tunable lasers, reconfigurable optical networks, advanced optical modulation formats.and energy efficient optical telecommunication.
