Dr Gabrielle Carty

Biographical Details:

Gabrielle Carty has been a member of staff in SALIS since 1990. Prior to that she worked in the private sector and as a freelance translator from Italian and Spanish. Although most of her teaching is in translation practice, she co-ordinated and taught core beginner's language courses for eight years and has always contributed to modules on Spanish culture (including film) and society. At an administrative level, she chaired the BA in Applied Languages and the BA in Languages for Intercultural Communication from Sept 2001 to Dec 2005, was Convenor of the Translation Studies Section in SALIS from Jan 2006 to Dec 2009 and acted as exchange co-ordinator for language students going to/ coming from our partner universities in Spain from 1994 to 2011.

Research Interests:

Although I have an abiding interest in translation and translation studies, my research has always focused on film studies including the history and criticism of film in Spain and Italy; comedy theory, in particular comedy in film; star theory/ reception theory; and representations of the civil war in Spanish cinema.
