Dr Veronica Lambert

Biographical Details:

Dr Lambert joined the School of Nursing and Human Sciences at Dublin City University as Lecturer in Childrens and General Nursing in 2006. Prior to this she worked as a Clinical Education Facilitator at the Childrens University Hospital Temple Street. She is a Registered Childrens (RCN) and General (RGN) Nurse and completed her BNS (Hons) degree (graduated in 2002 with first class honours and awarded a Gold Medal for academic achievement) and PhD (2009) at the School of Nursing and Midwifery Studies, Trinity College Dublin. Her PhD thesis, entitled visible-ness, explored the nature of communication between children and health professionals in a specialist children's hospital from childrens perspectives. From this work Dr Lambert developed a Child Transitional Communication Model (JAN 2011 67(3)569-582). Since her PhD, the core focus of Dr Lambert's research is communication at multiple levels; namely child, family, peers, schools, health professionals, health care settings, community and public/social media. The concepts of children's voice, psychosocial health, technology and creative arts underpin all areas of her work. Current projects include; development and investigation (feasibility RCT) of the impact of an information communication technology intervention (ICT-I) to prepare children admitted to hospital for elective surgery; and a Health Research Board funded mixed methods inquiry of disclosure challenges faced by children living with epilepsy. She is currently leading a Cochrane Review on virtual reality simulation for pain and anxiety in children and is lead editor for the textbook entitled Communication Skills for Children's Nurses due for release in Nov 2012. In Sept 2012, Dr Lambert was presented with the Jozien Bensing Award for talented early career research from the European Association for Communication in Healthcare (EACH).

Research Interests:

Health care communication among health professionals, children, parents, families, peers, community and society; health literacy; enhancing children's healthcare through technology based interventions/the humanistic side of technology (e-health); psychosocial healthcare needs of children and their families (e.g. anxiety, pain, self-esteem, stigmatisation, self-management); communication around healthy lifestyle choices; use of arts in research and healthcare; creative participatory methodologies to engage in research with children; ethnography and mixed methods research. Dr Lambert is currently working on proposals, and interested in collaborating, in the areas of communication surroundings weight related issues/healthy lifestyles and health literacy needs of children and parents.
