Dr Vladimir Gubala

Biographical Details:

I was born in Slovakia and I obtained my BSc and MSc degree from the Slovak University of Technology in 1999 and 2001, respectively. My research project focused on Organic synthesis, and characterization of enantiomerically pure derivatives of unnatural amino acids in the synthesis of pharmaceutically active compounds. In 2001, I enrolled in the chemistry graduate programme of University of Puerto Rico, USA, where I was working on project called `Self-assembled Nanostructures based on 8-Aryl-2'-deoxyguanosine analogues¿. I defended my doctoral thesis in 2006 and moved to University of Florida, USA, where I was working as a post-doctoral associate in Dr. Castellano¿s group. In May 2007, I started my appointment at DCU, specifically at the Biomedical Diagnostics Institute. In total, I have published 20 peer-reviewed articles (4 of which as corresponding author), one book chapter and I have filed two patent applications as a lead inventor. I have given 6 oral presentations (one INVITED) at international conferences, including the American Chemical Society national meetings, The Electrochemical Society meeting, Biosensors and Conference on Advanced Material and Nanotechnology. I find Ireland as a great place to pursue my hobbies, which include football and off-road cycling. I¿m a nature enthusiast and I teach my two sons to respect and know the environment they¿re living in.
