Prof Patrick Flood

Biographical Details:

Patrick Flood is Professor of Organizational Behaviour at DCU Business School where he teaches organizational behaviour, leadership and change. He received his Ph.D from the London School of Economics (LSE) where he was a British Council FCO scholar. He is an MBS graduate from UCD where he was Irish Cement Ltd. Scholar. He is an alumnus of the LBS International Teachers Programme (ITP-1998). Immediately prior to joining DCU in 2007 he worked at the University of Limerick. He has also held faculty and visiting appointments at the London School of Economics (1990-1991); University of Maryland (1993); London Business School (1994-1996), Irish Management Institute (1997-2002) and the Australian Graduate School of Management (2003). He currently holds visiting appointments at Cambridge Judge Business School and NorthEastern University, China.

HR magazine has ranked Patrick #8 in the 2012 Influential International Thinkers category. He has taught on executive programmes in Australia, China, UK, Belgium, Italy, Netherlands and the USA . He is the recipient of a teaching excellence award, research excellence awards and a Fulbright scholarship. The impact of his work on policy and practice has been recognised by fellowship of the Academy of Social Sciences (AcSS) and the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA). His academic publications include some 45 papers in journals such as Human Resource Management, Human Relations, Industrial Relations and Strategic Management Journal. His publications for managers include 14 books and monographs: Persuasive Leadership: Lessons from the Arts (Jossey Bass, 2010), Leadership in Ireland (Blackhall, 2010); Strategy Implementation (Blackwell, 2000), Effective Top Management Teams (Blackhall, 2000) and Managing Without Traditional Methods (Addison Wesley, 1996). He is a Consulting Editor with the Journal of Organizational and Occupational Psychology . He contributes regularly to the media about the implications of his research for management practice and is a regular conference speaker. His work has been featured in the Financial Times, Sunday Times, Irish Times and RTE.

Research Interests:

Leadership, change, high performance work systems and organizational effectiveness (with Dr Janine Bosak and Dr Na Fu); Health services effectiveness and patient safety (IRCHSS and HRB grants-with Dr. Aoife Mc Dermott, Dr Lauren Hamel and Dr. Edel Conway); Dr Na Fu (professional services firm effectiveness).

He has raised some E1.7m with his research team from agencies such as IRCHSS, ESRC and HRB.
