Dr. Karen Devine

Biographical Details:

Karen Devine holds a Bachelor of Arts in Politics and Spanish (University College, Dublin 1993) a Masters of Arts in European Integration (University of Limerick, 1995) a Postgraduate Diploma in Statistics (University of Dublin, Trinity College, 2003) and graduated with a PhD in Political Science from University of Dublin, Trinity College in June 2007. She is a Lecturer in International Relations, specialising in teaching European Union politics, Irish Foreign Policy and International Relations Theories and Methodologies. Dr. Devine delivers two undergraduate modules: LG329 Issues in International Relations, LG345 Issues in European Integration, three MA modules: LG525 Irish Foreign Policy, LG572 Development of the European Union, LG593 Issues and Practice in International Relations and a PhD-level module: LG603 Qualitative Methods. She was an IRCHSS postdoctoral research fellow at the Centre for International Studies at DCU, 2008-2009. She has previously tutored courses on Irish Foreign Policy, International Relations and European Integration at the University of Dublin and at the University of Aberdeen. Her recent publications include articles published or forthcoming in Cooperation and Conflict, International Politics, International Political Science Review, Irish Political Studies and Irish Studies in International Affairs. Her research interests focus on the politics of neutrality in Ireland, Austria, Sweden and Finland and the European Union, public opinion on foreign policy in Europe and the United States of America, the evolution of the European Union's Common Security and Defence Policy, the use of methodological pluralism incorporating postpositivist and positivist approaches in IR and the development of critical social constructivist theory. Dr. Devine has published articles on neutrality in the Irish Times newspaper, contributed to the Sunday Business Post newspaper and a number of international newspapers (e.g. Poland, Japan); has appeared on RTE PrimeTime and The Week in Politics television programmes, the 'Tonight with Vincent Browne' current affairs television programme; RTE Radio's DriveTime, The Late Debate, Saturday with Charlie Bird, and The Sunday Forum current affairs programmes; several RTE news radio programmes; NewsTalk 106's 'The Dunphy Show', and a number of local Irish and international (e.g. USA, France) radio shows to discuss aspects of European Union politics. She is interested in supervising PhD students in the areas of European Union (EU) politics, EU Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP), Neutral and Non-Aligned state foreign policies, and public opinion on foreign policy. Dr. Devine is a Fulbright Scholar at Columbia University in the City of New York, USA, 2012-2013, researching the impact of patriotism on public attitudes to foreign policy in the USA and Ireland.
