Dr Andreas Heise
Biographical Details:
Andreas Heise received his PhD in Polymer Chemistry in 1997 from the University of Hannover, Germany, under the supervision of Prof. Henning Menzel on grafting of polypeptides to functional surfaces. In 1997 he was awarded a two-year postdoc grant from the German Science Foundation (DFG) for a joint position at the IBM Almaden Research Center and Stanford University, California, USA. During that time he worked closely with the research groups of Dr. Robert Miller and Dr. Jim Hedrick (IBM), and Prof. Curt Frank (Stanford) on the development of functional polymer architectures for low dielectric materials for on-chip applications. In 1999 he moved to an industrial senior scientist position at DSM Research in The Netherlands, which he held until 2008. In the performance materials group he was responsible for the evaluation and development of advanced polymer technologies and their industrial application. Besides his industrial position, in 2002 Andreas Heise accepted a part-time assignment as a research group leader in the polymer chemistry group at the TU Eindhoven, The Netherlands. In 2008 he accepted a SFI Stokes Senior Lecturer position at Dublin City University, Ireland, were he established a Polymer Research group.
Research Interests:
The main research interest is in the rational design of functional polymeric materials for advanced applications. A strong emphasis is on the development of new synthetic routes towards well-defined functional materials, which includes controlled polymerisation and functionalisation techniques as well as biotechnological methods. Target application areas are sensor and biomedical technology, and nanoscience. In a highly interdisciplinary approach synthetic and application driven research is conducted in collaboration with several academic and industrial partners.
