Dr Lauren Hamel
Biographical Details:
Lauren Hamel (PhD - Michigan State University, 2009) is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Dublin City University and is a part of the HRM group and a member of the Learning, Innovation and Knowledge (Link) Research Centre. Lauren has worked on several large-scale research projects funded by the United State¿s Department of Defense, the National Cancer Institute, and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. Lauren¿s expertise lies in the areas of health communication and interpersonal communication with a persuasion emphasis. She studies the cross section of these three areas by exploring what influences interpersonal relationships have on health attitudes, knowledge, behaviours, and outcomes. Her methodological training is heavily quantitative but it is supplemented with increasing experience in qualitative methodologies. Lauren held a previous post in the Department of Psychology at the University of Limerick.
Research Interests:
Lauren is currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow funded through the Health Research Board. She is a member of a research team conducting an international comparison utilizing a systemic paradigm in considering the design and implementation of national policy for quality and safety in hospitals in both Ireland and Scotland. The focus of this investigation is on policy, organisational and managerial features, as well as clinical aspects of care with emphasis on the overarching system and organisational enablers and barriers to quality and safety. Broadly, Lauren¿s research interests focus on how communication can be used to motivate and influence the adoption and maintenance of healthy behaviours and the cessation of unhealthy behaviours. She is particularly interested in how communicative and psychological theoretical perspectives can be applied in practical settings such as healthcare, business, and familial settings in an effort to improve various types of health-related outcomes and output. Her specific individual research interests include studying the use of action tendency emotions as health persuasion tactics, the influence of social norms on various health-related perceptions and behaviours, how perceived benefits and barriers and social support influence the physical activity levels of preadolescents and adolescents, and the effectiveness of web and computer-based physical activity and diet interventions.
