Biographical Details:

My role as Program Leader of the microarray/bioinformatics core facility at NICB involves: ¿ Running gene expression profiling experiments in order to identify gene targets for functional validation. Projects involve transcriptome profiling of production cell lines, cancer and diabetes cell systems as well as several other non-mammalian organisms. ¿ Management of the microarray core facility at NICB, with responsibility for budgetary planning, project prioritisation, planning, and evaluation. ¿ Carrying out various bioinformatics analyses on diverse data types that enter the laboratory from the microarray lab or elsewhere. This is a vital component of the microarray analysis suite, whereby genelists are interpreted within a meaningful biological framework to identify gene and protein targets for functional validation. ¿ Management of the bioinformatics lab at NICB, with responsibility for budgetary planning, project prioritisation, planning, and evaluation. ¿ Collaboration with various groups, both within NICB and externally (in DCU or elsewhere), to help design and plan microarray experiments ¿ Training of NICB staff members and students in running microarray experiments and in downstream bioinformatics analyses ¿ Keeping abreast of current developments in the area of microarray and bioinformatics research, achieved by regularly reading publications, attending conferences and keeping in touch with the UKAffy microarray user-group forum. Additional activities in which I am involved at NICB include: ¿ Setting up and supervision of a new bioprocess research laboratory at NICB, focussing specifically on profiling of suspension cell lines in batch culture. ¿ Implementation and administration of the newly-installed NICB Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). ¿ Design and delivery of lectures and presentations to undergraduate and postgraduate students in DCU and other institutions, visiting dignitaries and industrial collaborators. ¿ Supervision of post-graduate research in the areas of biotechnology, bioengineering, cancer and bioinformatics ¿ Preparation of research grant applications e.g. Science Foundation Ireland, HEA, HRB ¿ Regular publication of research papers, Intellectual Property output (Patent filing) ¿ Quality assurance of projects and laboratory procedures.
