Guidelines for the Development and Maintenance of the Primary DCU Web Site
It is essential that the information presented on the Primary Web Site of the University is up-to-date, accurate and consistent. It is also essential that the design, presentation and navigation aspects of the web site are reviewed regularly.
Responsibility for each page on the Primary Web Site is assigned to an appropriate individual, group, faculty, school, unit or office. The Web Development Specialist maintains a register of web site pages and the associated parties responsible for them.
The appropriate party is responsible for all aspects of the page including format, text of links and nomination of pages to which links connect. Pages must conform to the Principles and Standards for Publishing Material on the Primary DCU Web Site. The appropriate party is also responsible for dealing with feedback addressed to them as "owners" of the page - this would typically arrive through the Contact facility provided on each page.
Changes to pages are submitted as the need arises and a formal review of each page is carried out at the beginning of each semester.
Changes are submitted to the Web Development Specialist for implementation.
Process for Implementing Changes to the Primary Web Site.
Sources of Change.
The requirement to change pages arises from a number of sources including the need to update information, the need to add or remove links, the need to redesign, as a result of the formal review at the beginning of each semester and from comments received through the Contact facility etc.
Submitting Requests for Change.
Requests for change are submitted, by the "owners" of pages, to the Web Development Specialist for implementation.
On receiving requests for change, the Web Development Specialist will:
- Draft new or revised pages.
- Present the Draft page(s) to the "owner" for approval.
- Implement the new or revised pages once approved by the "owner".
Increasingly, over time, more "owners" will acquire the facilities to develop the pages within their own areas - in these situations the revised pages are submitted to the Web Development Specialist for publication - in this way, consistency and adherence to standards can be monitored across the entire site.
