Emily Duffy Science and Health Outstanding Graduate Researcher

The Faculty of Science and Health outstanding graduate researcher award honours graduate students of exceptional ability who have made an outstanding contribution to the research effort of the Faculty. The award is made on the basis of the totality of by candidates’ research accomplishment during their research degree at DCU. In 2011, it has been awarded to Emily Duffy from the School of Mathematical Sciences.

DCU Team in 2011 Rotman International Trading Competition

This year the DCU team for the Rotman International Trading Competition, consisting of Gareth Caffrey, Dermot Greally, David Maher, and Conor O'Regan came 11th out of 50. The competition was hosted by the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto.

Jennifer Tweed Awarded Chancellor's Medal

Jennifer Tweed, who was graduated in 2010 with a B. Sc. in Financial and Actuarial Mathematics, received the Chancellor's Medal at a graduation ceremony on 2nd November 2010. The award is given for excellence in academic achievements, contributions to the social fabric of the University, and to society at large.

Fulbright Scholar Investigates Project Maths

Dr Sarah Lubienski visited DCU from September-December 2010. She was a Fulbright Scholar, and hosted by CASTeL. Dr Lubienski is an internationally recognised researcher in mathematics education. Her research work while at DCU focussed on Project Maths. She also contributed to undergraduate and postgraduate mathematics education programmes during her time in DCU, and jointly taught the Maths Experience module for the School of Mathematical Sciences.

Head Start Maths Programme for Mature Students

Head Start Maths was a week-long intensive maths programme aimed at mature students returning to education. The programme, which was designed by Dr. Olivia Gill (UL) and Prof. Duncan Lawson (Coventry), aims to help mature students make a successful transition to the maths they may encounter at third-level, by improving their basic skills before the start of semester. It was run Dr. Eabhnat Ní Fhloinn of the School of Mathematical Sciences, and took place from Monday, 6th-10th September 2010. It was free of charge.

President's Award for Civic Engagement 2010

The Maths Learning Centre, in conjunction with the Access Office, was awarded the President's Award for Civic Engagement for their Voluntary Maths Tuition Programme. This initiative, organised in conjunction with BITE (Ballymun Initiative for Third-Level Education), involved recruiting student volunteers from DCU to provide free, one-to-one maths help to second-level students in Trinity Comprehensive School in Ballymun. DCU students attended the school for an hour once a week and helped pupils with homework, revision and exam preparation. Pupils from 3rd, 5th and 6th years were involved and feedback from both pupils and tutors was extremely positive. The award was made in the student category in recognition of the 90 student volunteers involved.
