DCU named in World’s Top Young Universities

For a second time this month, Dublin City University has been ranked among the world’s best in a league table of the world’s young universities (less than 50 years old).  The prestigious Times Higher Education has published its 100 Under 50 which lists DCU in 84th position, up two places since 2012.  The league table aims to show which nations are challenging the US and the UK as higher education powerhouses and offers insights into which institutions may be future world leaders.  This achievement by DCU follows closely on the QS World Top 50 under 50 University Rankings published last week in which DCU was the only featured higher education institution on the island of Ireland, rising from 46th to 40th.

President of DCU, Professor Brian MacCraith said,

“To be the only Irish university ranked in two internationally renowned league tables, two years in a row, signals an increasing recognition, both at home and abroad,  of DCU’s reputation for excellence in teaching, research and innovation.  Our year-on-year improvement in both rankings highlights the upward trajectory of DCU as an innovative educational force, in good company alongside young, breakthrough universities such as Hong Kong University of Science & Technology, University of California, Irvine and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.”

The publication of these two league tables is noteworthy as most university ratings favour older institutions with an established brand and a vast alumni body.  The THE 100 Under 50 places more emphasis on objective benchmarks such as teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook, with less weight given to reputational indicators which tend to benefit older, larger institutions.
