DCU students prevalent in European Athletics Championships

With the European Athletics Championships in Zurich coming to a close on Sunday evening, there was plenty of Irish interest in the finals of several events with a handful of athletes being past or present students of Dublin City University.

One of the brightest talents on the Irish front throughout last week was Economics, Politics and Law third year student Paul Robinson who qualified for the final of the 1500 metres. The Kildare native was a contender throughout Sunday’s final, getting narrowly beaten to the bronze medal by Chris O’Hare of Great Britain. The event was won by France’s Mahiedine Mekhissi-Benabbad in a time of 3:45.60. Paul Robinson came fourth in a time of 3:46.35.

Brian Gregan has been a notable talent on the Irish athletics scene for the past number of years and the DCU Sports Science and Health graduate led the Irish quartet of Gregan, Mark English, Richard Morrissey and Thomas Barr to a new national 4 x 400 metre relay record in a time of 3:01.67 in the final of the event on Sunday.

Other DCU students and graduates involved in the week-long event in Switzerland included Sports Science and Health graduate Fionnuala Britton, Laura Reynolds, a former PE and Biology student, Catherine McManus, a fourth year Marketing, Innovation and Technology student and Craig Lynch, who studied Science Education at the university.

Congratulations to all DCU students and graduates on the phenomenal achievement of representing their country at the Championships.
