DCU to recognise world’s leading social entrepreneur

"I believe that we can create a world without poverty because it is not the poor that create poverty."

Prof. Muhammad Yunus

DCU is delighted to announce a special Convocation ceremony to award an Honorary Doctorate on the Nobel Peace Laureate, Professor Muhammed Yunus.

Professor Yunus is recognised globally for his transformational leadership as a social entrepreneur, working to eradicate poverty and he is the recipient of numerous honours and awards internationally.

Muhammad Yunus has shown himself to be a leader who has managed to translate a vision into practical action for the benefit of millions of people, not only in Bangladesh, but in many other countries also.  His vision is the total eradication of poverty from the world.  What started out, in the 1970s, as a project to examine the possibility of designing a credit delivery system targeted at the rural poor in Bangladesh, became revolutionary in its impact earning Prof Yunus the title 'banker to the poor'.

Through his work with the Grameen Bank, Prof Yunus has empowered millions of people, mostly women, to seek out opportunities to work with respect and with dignity. In 2006, their extraordinary achievements were recognised by the Norwegian Nobel Committee when Prof Yunus and the Grameen Bank were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Peace 'for their efforts to create economic and social development from below'.

It is a great privilege for DCU to pay tribute to him through the award of a Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil honoris causa).  The ceremony will take place in The Helix, DCU at 10.30am on Saturday, 18th October.  Guests are asked to be seated no later than 10:15am.
