Success at National Thesis in Three Competition

Jennifer Gaughran, a PhD student at DCU, has won 1st prize in the National Thesis in Three competition. Jennifer is a Ph.D. student on the BioAnalysis & Therapeutics (Bio-AT) programme working under the supervision of Professor Jens Ducrée in the Biomedical Diagnostics Institute and the School of Physics.

Jennifer's winning presentation was entitled "Spinning a Yarn: Quick and Easy Disease Detection”. Her research is focused on the design of compact point-of-care devices for disease diagnosis.

The event was held in the Sugar Club, Dublin and was organised by Systems Biology Ireland and Insight and presented by broadcaster Mr. Jonathan McCrea. On the night over 200 audience members were entertained by bite-sized pieces of research in 3 slides of 3 minutes each. Mr. Will Goodbody, RTÉ, science journalist Dr. Claire O’Connell, and Ms. Margie McCarthy, Science Foundation Ireland, chose the winners from 20 excellent speakers from all over Ireland.

The event was sponsored by Science Foundation Ireland’s Discover programme.

Also taking part in the competition from DCU were Ms. Sarah Gilgunn and Ms. Claire O’Connell. Congratulations to all those that took part!
