RTÉ DG Noel Curran to deliver inaugural public lecture in DCU

Mr Noel Curran, who will shortly step down from his position as RTÉ Director General, is to become Adjunct Professor of Journalism in the School of Communications at Dublin City University (DCU).

Mr Curran, a graduate of DCU, will also join the Advisory Board of DCU’s Institute for Future Media and Journalism (FuJo). To mark the appointment, Mr Curran will deliver a public lecture in DCU today (Wednesday April 13th) at 4.30pm addressing the challenges and risks for the public service broadcasting model in a digital media landscape.

Mr Curran’s term as Director General coincided with the greatest set of challenges faced by RTÉ in its 50 year history - collapsing advertising revenues instigated by the recession, unprecedented technological change in the media sector, and a series of editorial crises in the station’s current affairs output. Having faced and managed these challenges, Mr Curran leaves RTÉ in a position of financial security and has reasserted the relevance and value of public service broadcasting in Ireland.

Born in Monaghan, Mr Curran studied communications in DCU and worked as a business journalist before joining RTÉ in 1992 as an investigative reporter. He moved into television production becoming Executive Producer of live Entertainment, which included programmes like The Late Late Show and the 1997 Eurovision Song Contest. He served two terms as Editor of Current Affairs in the News Division where he established the Prime Time Investigates programme. In 2003 he joined the RTÉ's Executive as Managing Director of Television and oversaw a significant increase in investments for Irish productions.

Mr Curran has left RTÉ twice: in 2000 to establish an independent production company and in 2010 to pursue private business interests. He returned in 2011 to take up the position of Director General. His duties as adjunct professor will include delivering guest lectures and seminars and contributing to the development of DCU’s journalism programmes. Within FuJo he will assist the Institute in evaluating how the market-led evolution of media technology and business models can satisfy the social and democratic need for quality journalism.
