President McAleese will open the first four-day workshop of the Irish-African Partnership for Research Capacity Building (IAPRCB) at Dublin City University on 8 April.
This first workshop (of six) will be attended by 50-60 university and academic leaders from the nine participating Irish and Northern Irish universites and the four participating African universities, including presidents, vice-chancellors, vice-presidents for research and faculty heads.
The African university representatives are from Uganda, Tanzania, Mozambique and Malawi.
The conference aims to develop a coordinated approach to research capacity building in higher education institutions in order to make an effective contribution to the reduction of poverty in those countries.
Marian Finucane of RTE is chairperson for the Opening Day of the conference.
