Let's Talk About College

As part of College Aware Week (www.collegeaware.ie), DCU Access is hosting an information evening for parents, 'Lets Talk about College'. The event is running from 6.30 to 8.30 pm in Setanta GAA club on the Ballymun Road.  During the evening we will have speakers who will cover topics such as:

  • how to apply to the CAO;
  • how to apply for a SUSI grant;
  • how to apply to the HEAR scheme;
  • how to apply to college as a mature student and;
  • how to support your child with a disability to access college.

Research has shown that parents are the most significant influence in a child's decision to progress to further education but they don't always have the information or don't fully understand the process and so cannot give their children the support they need.  Students can often rely on their school's Guidance Counsellor as their parents may not be as aware of the process of applying to 3rd level.  Guidance Counselling hours have reduced significantly in schools in the last 4 years and this has had a negative effect in areas of disadvantage where students are traditionally heavily reliant on this service to help them access college.

So, to celebrate College Aware Week, DCU is organising this event for parents who would like to understand more about encouraging and supporting their children in applying to college, and maybe to think about returning to college themselves!
