Understanding the Course:

PLEASE NOT THIS PROGRAMME IS NOT ON OFFER FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2013-2014
This course is full-time for one academic year (or two semesters) and is designed to provide an alternative route for admission to any of the Level 8 Honours B.Eng. in Engineering courses within the Faculty of Engineering and Computing for:
§ Applicants not meeting the normal DCU engineering course entry requirements, but who can show a strong interest in engineering and meet both the minimum University requirements and the Open Opportunities special requirements; or
§ Applicants with the necessary entry requirements who might wish to sample engineering before committing to the full degree; and
§ Applicants who are successful at a special competency-based interview.
The interview, conducted by DCU Engineering staff, will attempt to identify elements in an applicant's history that would indicate that they have a reasonable chance of succeeding on a challenging Honours Degree Engineering course. Mathematical ability is considered to be especially important. Other elements to be considered are Leaving Certificate points level, background in science and motivation.
About You:
Registration on the Open Opportunities in Engineering Course (Extended) is based on Leaving Certificate results but takes place outside the CAO process. Admission is competitive and is based on an interview following the announcement of the annual Leaving Certificate results and the first round of the CAO process, by which time all of those with an offer to join a DCU Engineering programme by the normal route will have accepted. If having registered a CAO preference for a DCU Engineering Programme and failed to gain access in the normal way you may be invited for interview to be considered for access to the Open Opportunities in Engineering Course (Extended). To qualify for an interview applicants are required to have met the normal matriculation requirements, and have achieved at least an A2 in the Mathematics Leaving Certificate ordinary paper or a D3 in the higher paper.
Course Structure:
Successful applicants will join the common engineering first-year class and will study the same modules - but for the Open Opportunities course, the teaching of mathematics will include an additional module with special tutorial support. Students who successfully complete this course will be admitted to Year Two of their chosen B.Eng./M.Eng. in Engineering course.
