School of Electronic Engineering
Undergraduate Programmes
The School of Electronic Engineering runs three great degree options, and also a joint degree with the School of Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering.
As an engineering student at DCU, you can either choose to go directly on to any of our programmes, or you can choose to participate in the ‘Common Entry’ first year.
More about Common Entry into Engineering – a popular option for students who wish to get a broad engineering introduction, and go on to specialise in an electronic or mechanical engineering degree option in second year of study.
- Digital Media Engineering - Digital media engineering is a branch of engineering that deals with the creation, processing, and presentation of digital
content. If you play computer games, listen to music on your mobile phone or use social networking websites to keep in touch with your friends,
then you’re already familiar with what digital media engineers work with.
- Information and Communications Engineering - Communication in today’s world is almost instantaneous, so what’s the next advancement?
In the ICE degree you’ll learn to harness the technologies used in mobile internet access, VoIP and IP television and much more.
- Electronic Engineering - Take a look at your favourite high-tech devices - mp3 players, mobile phones, digital televisions, laptop computers and
games consoles - Electronic Engineers invent and design all of these things (and much more besides). Why be content using these devices when
you can build and design the next generation models?
- Mechatronic Engineering – (Run in conjunction with the School of Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering). Essentially, Mechatronic Engineering
is about the moving parts that drive robots, electronics and machines. Consider what you use on a daily basis and how many moving parts
are involved. Those parts have all been created by mechatronic engineers, and they ensure that our world keeps moving
.
INTRA – Work Placement in Third Year
It is important to note that all degree options offered by the School of Electronic Engineering have a standard 6 month ‘INTRA’ placement in Year 3. This is usually with a business in Ireland but some students may go abroad or be placed in research positions within DCU. Some of the biggest companies in the world offer INTRA placements, including Vodafone, IBM, Philips, Google, Microsoft and Xilinx. Degree relevant work experience obtained on an INTRA placement can be extremely beneficial when it comes to finding a position as graduate engineer.
Not sure about Maths?
If the Maths exam didn’t go quite according to plan, or you didn’t take the Higher option, don’t forget to check out the Open Opportunities course. Registration on the Open Opportunities in Engineering Course is based on Leaving Certificate results but takes place outside the CAO process. Admission is based on an interview, during which DCU Engineering staff will attempt to identify elements in an applicant's history that would indicate that they would have a reasonable chance of succeeding on a challenging Honours Engineering degree programme.
Optional Fifth Year (Masters in Engineering)
DCU has always been at the forefront of running accredited engineering courses which meet the educational requirements for Chartered Engineer status. Through Engineers Ireland international agreements, Chartered Engineer accreditation is recognised by the IET (UK) and by EU nations through FEANI. It is also recognised by the USA, Canada, New Zealand and Australia and many other countries through the Washington Accord. After 2012, only Masters awards can achieve Engineers Ireland Chartered Engineer accreditation and DCU has the first Masters programmes in Ireland to achieve provisional accreditation status. Upon successful completion of your four year B.Eng.(Hons) degree, and subject to meeting the relevant entry requirements, you will have the option to continue your studies to Masters level in Electronic Engineering, Digital Media Engineering or Information & Communications Engineering. Alternatively it is possible to take our very flexible 1 year taught Masters programmes in Electronic Systems or Telecommunications Engineering.
