updated regulations on mobile phones in examination centres

The University Examination Regulations state that "Candidates are not permitted to bring mobile phones or any electronic device, other than a standard scientific calculator, into the examination hall. This includes, but is not limited to any electronic device capable of wireless communication and/or storing information (e.g., translator, cell phone, pager, PDA, MP3 units, iPods, etc). ".

If a candidate has a mobile phone in his/her possession in the examination hall, whether this phone is powered on or off, the phone shall be removed and retained by the invigilator. The invigilator will bring the phone to the examinations office following the examination. Examinations office staff will check the phone in the presence of the candidate, to ensure that the phone does not contain unauthorised material. Following this check, the candidate will be required to pay €20 to retrieve the phone. If there are notes of any kind relating to any element of the candidate's course, the candidate shall be deemed to be in breach of the Examination Regulations. The Examinations Officer will report the matter to the Disciplinary Committee.

Similarly, if a mobile phone in a candidate's bag or jacket rings or the alarm activitates during the examination, the phone shall be removed and retained by an invigilator. The invigilator will bring the phone to the examinations office following the examination. The candidate will be required to pay €20 to retrieve the phone.
