This module aims to:Provide students with an understanding of the finance function and the financial environment in which small developing companies operate and to introduce the student to the importance of personal financial planning.

Learning Outcomes
1. Recognise to importance of the finance function in the achievement of the organisations objectives
2. Identify sources of finance available to a company and describe the characteristics, benefits and limitations of each
3. Demonstrate an appreciation of Portfolio Theory and the Efficient Market Hypothesis
4. Outline the personal financial planning process, the main types of personal investments and benefits, limitations and appropriateness of each. Calculate a person's net worth

Indicative Content and Learning Activities
The Financial Environment.
The finance function and its contribution to business objectives; corporate governance and agency theory, general macro-economic factors that impact upon financial goals and strategies; ethical issues facing the finance manager.

Sources of Finance.
Sources of finance; finance mix; long term vs. short term funds; internal vs. external funds and factors influencing a company's choice of funding; characteristics, benefits, limitations, appropriateness, availability and risk profile of all sources of finance; means by which each source is raised; typical terms and conditions associated with each; issues facing SMEs in raising finance; managing relationships with fund providers; venture capital funds; fund raising and due diligence process; introduction to the main capital and money markets and principle methods of trading and raising funds..

Personal Finance.
Concept and principles behind personal finance planning, varying financial life cycle requirements; assessment of personal finance net worth, future financial requirements and the funding thereof; characteristics and appropriateness of the main forms of personal investments - insurance savings, investment, pension products, mortgages; terms and conditions and issues therewith..

Investment Appraisal Techniques.
Select, describe and apply appropriate investment decision criteria (NPV, IRR, ARR and Payback) including consideration of non-financial factors..

Cost of Capital.
Determining the appropriate discount rate; calculation of fixed interest yields, calculation of equity yields using dividend valuation model and capital assets pricing model; WACC application and limitations of WACC..
