Description
This module will introduce the student to the principles and applications of photonics in biology, biotechnology, and especially, in biomedicine. The module will also cover the principles and applications of spectroscopic methods of analysis. The students will be provided with the required theoretical background for relevant laboratory experiments involving ultra violet spectroscopy, spectrofluorimetry, atomic absorption and emission spectroscopy. Students will complete a short assignment on some aspect of biophotonics and spectroscopy and an exam on the main principles underlying these concepts.

Learning Outcomes
1. Explain basic concepts of optical interactions with biological materials.
2. Outline a range of applications of biophotonics, especially in the context of biomedical diagnostics.
3. Recognise the power of photonics to advance knowledge in biomedical science.
4. Describe the relationship between measurement of a physical property of a substance and its concentration.
5. Explain how spectroscopy determines physical constants.
6. Use spectroscopy to calculate a number of properties of inorganic and organic species.
