Description
In this module, students will participate in a three-month research placement within the Biomedical Diagnostics Institute at DCU. The module will help the students develop the research skills needed to adopt a problem solving approach to diagnostics research. Guidance will be provided in the basic methodology of scientific research and in summarising, elaborating and explaining research results.Students will also gain a number of transferable skilss, including communication, interpersonal and organisational skills. Students will provide the structure of their own literature review/project plan and this should clearly identify the context of the proposed research, and status of the field, together with realistic time scale for completion. Students will complete a dissertation that will include a full scientific report of their project. Also, students will give an oral presentation of their project to all PIs and mentors involved in the project.

Learning Outcomes
1. Apply the methods and procedures of scientific research and development.
2. Locate the source material necessary for background and related information.
3. Evaluate sourced information critically and have an ability to independently check its correctness where appropriate.
4. Outline a strategy and time plan for completion of research.
5. Have a logical approach to experimental design, measurement, and data analysis.
6. Prepare documents using quality aspects of reports, user manuals, scientific articles and internet publications.
7. Demonstrate a detailed knowledge of the aspect of Biomedical Diagnostics which is the subject matter of the research project.
8. Contribute to research in their specific area of biomedical diagnostics.
9. Present their research topic on multiple levels of sophistication.
