Description

This modules gives the student an introduction to the basic principles of heat and mass transfer in the context of modern bioprocessing technology.

Learning Outcomes

1. Formulate and solve simple problems involving heat conduction in planar and cylindrical geometries.
2. Formulate simple conductive heat transfer problems in terms of single-phase and overall heat transfer coefficients.
3. Design a double pipe heat exchanger using the log-mean temperature difference.
4. Formulate and solve simple problems involving mass diffusion in planar geometry.
5. Formulate simple conductive mass transfer problems in temrs of single-phase and overall mass transfer coefficients.
6. Design and analyse batch and continuous liquid-liquid extraction systems.

Analysis of the sterilisation of a bioreactor.
Design of double-pipe heat exchangers.

Steady and quasi-steady state diffusion.
