Description
This module gives the students an introduction to the basic principles of bioprocess engineering with particular emphasis on developing problem solving skills, particularly those required to carry out mass and energy balances in non-reacting systems.

Learning Outcomes
1. Solve numerical problems in SI units and understand the importance of units, dimensions and dimensionless groups in bioprocess engineering.
2. Formulate and solve solve mass and energy balances for simple bioprocess systems.
3. Carry out simple algebraic, numerical and calculus-based calculations relevant to bioprocess engineering.
4. Use Excel to carry out calculations and display graphs in solving bioprocess engineering problems.
