Description
The purpose of this module is to update and advance students knowledge of chemical agents and toxicology by introducing them to the concepts of hazard and risks associated with these agents. The approach taken will be to understand and assess the potential adverse effects of chemical agents and their control in the laboratory. Additionally, this module will provide a knowledge base that will allow students tackle work related safety issues associated with chemical agents. Students are expected to attend lectures, practicals, contribute to seminars and engage in online activities.

Learning Outcomes
1. Explain the various categories of hazardous chemicals and be able to evaluate the risks associated with chemical hazards.
2. Specify the controls and the personal protective equipment (PPE) necessary to work with chemicals safely.
3. Handle, store and dispose of hazardous chemicals in a safe and an environmentally friendly manner.
4. Construct a risk assessment for a chemical or a chemical process.
5. Plan for a chemical emergency.
6. Determine the current applicable chemical legislation.
