Description
This module will introduce students to the architecture and workings of the world wide web, and to the principles ofdesigning a usable website. It will address the technical structure of the WWW and practical aspects of web authoringas well as the architecture and design of web sites. It will Look at enhancing web pages by giving an overview ofadvanced web technologies such as XHTML, CSS, scripting languages such as JavaScript. In addition to the technical aspect, it will address design issues including Human-Computer Interaction, design principles, usability guidelines, coping with user diversity and covers methodologies to ensure a designed website is effective, easy to use and attractive.

Learning Outcomes
1. Describe the structure and operation of the World Wide Web.
2. Explain the governing principles of Web usability, design guidelines and user experience.
3. Sketch a series of web interfaces based on usability principles.
4. Critically appraise the usability of commercial Web sites
5. Develop a website using HTML
6. Include some interactivity with incorporating JavaScript into website
7. Enhance any website using CSS (Cascading Style Sheets)

Indicative Content and Learning Activities
Human-Computer Interaction.
The module starts with the introduction to Human-Computer Interaction, and necessary design principles and guidelines in order to help usable websites.

Website Design.
Web-specific design guidelines are introduced with many examples of good and bad designs from the Web..

Website Implementation.
An important part of the module is to learn the skill to actually implement a website, using a simple web-authoring tool such as Dreamweaver or FrontPage. Students will get familiarised with such a tool in the laboratory sessions each week..

Website Evaluation.
Concepts, methods and procedures for evaluation a website are covered in order to critically view websites and their usability..

HTML and CSS.
Details of HTML and CSS and how they work are covered, explained during lectures as well as independent laboratory sessions..
