Description
An introduction to the histories, ideas, themes and contexts of graphic and creative lens based media forms and expression. It offers perspectives on new media as technologies for different modes of cultural expression and aims to foster an understanding of the analogue interconnections that underpin contemporary digital media practice and visual culture.

Learning Outcomes
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the evolving technologies, genres and language of contemporary graphic and lens-based practice in new media.
2. Understand the influence of major cultural and aesthetic trends, both historical and contemporary, on a range of key media forms.
3. Research, produce and present a detailed group-based submission on an assigned visual medium/form.
4. Critically evaluate the relationship between analogue and digital media

Indicative Lecture Content - Graphic and Lens-based forms.
1. Introduction: Media forms and expressions. What is multimedia? What is digital media? Distinguishing between kinds of new media. What is new about new media?2. Sign. Type. Symbol. Image. Word and Image - Evolution of the alphabet., papyrus roll, the medieval codex, Illustrated manuscripts , movable typography in Europe – the invention of mass printing (Printing Press) – the distributed text and the democratization of communication. Narrative and allegory in 2D. Camera Obscura, the application of Perspective.3. Print & Design: The Graphic Image. Image & Text: The development of sequential narrative in print. Communicating ideas and sequential narratives. Posters, Comics, Books & Graphic Novels, Manga.4. Print & Design: Graphic novel and collected comic books to film. Graphic remediation in new media.5&6. Animation: Graphic Still to the Moving Image 1. Animation. History of animation, Traditional animation, limited animation, avant-garde animation, Anime. Traditional animation to CGI.7&8. Photography 1. From the latent image to the computed, synthetic image (a social, technological and creative/thematic history). Photography as index, evidence, trace and simulation. The fragmented image (Dada, Constructivism, Photomontage, etc). The Digital Image in contemporary art and visual culture). The post-photographic in contemporary imaging.9. Advertising: The Body and Fashion. Campaigns across media. Identity through consumer choices. Fashion across visual media.10. Typography. Static and kinetic typography.11. Video. Moving Image & Music. Image-music relations: Experimental music film and visual music history. Film musical forms and Pre-MTV Promos. Music Video post MTV - artistic practice and ideological apparatus: narrative and anti-narrative, diegetic sound, time, space, editing and the creation of identity. Music video forms and directors.
