Description
The focus of Visual Culture: Modernism to PoMo is art, architecture and the city from Realism to the cultural turn of postmodernism. Theories and practices of the modernist avant-garde (Cubism, Dadaism, Surrealism et al) and contemporary art and architecture will form a centrepiece of the module, so too the sociology of cities. The module will address questions or composition, content, form, innovation, representation and structure, as well as developing student’s knowledge of semiotics of the image. Within the framework of postmodernism and its critique the topics of hybridity and cultural identities will be analysed. While international in scope the impact of both modernism and postmodernism on Irish visual culture will be critically explored.
