This module explores how the mainstream media represent ethnic, cultural and religious identity in Ireland today and assesses the role they play in shaping current understandings of migration, racism and interculturalism. The module also critically analyses anti-racism and intercultural awareness initiatives in the media and demonstrates how words and images function to create distinct and often conflicting discourses around cultural integration.

Learning Outcomes
1. Identify key models of social and cultural integration and critically analyse diverse theories of racism and anti-racism in the Irish context
2. Evaluate the practices of various Irish media in their coverage of ethnic, cultural and religious identity
3. Assess the role and impact of the Irish media in shaping public opinion on immigration and interculturalism
4. Critically evaluate anti-racism and intercultural awareness initiatives in the media in relation to the relevant theoretical literature
5. Design and produce an anti-racism or intercultural awareness campaign and evaluate the strategy behind and potential impact of this artefact in relation to the relevant theoretical literature
