Description
This module explores the history of the development of cinema in Ireland. It analyses the relationship between films and national identity in a socio-historical context and critically interrogates the concept of a contemporary national cinema in the context of an increasingly transnational film industry and globalised society.

Learning Outcomes
1. Identify the key milestones in the development of Irish cinema
2. Explain the challenges posed to early Irish filmmaking in the context of Irelands economic, political and cultural climate
3. Critically analyse early and contemporary Irish films using a number of theoretical approaches
4. Evaluate and appraise the validity of national frameworks for the analysis of cinema by comparing and contrasting with cinematic output elsewhere
5. Develop complex, original arguments about Irish filmmaking using relevant theoretical material and original examples
