Description
This module stresses hyperlocal, or community, journalism, the small papers and broadcast outlets and websites that most beginning journalists work for and which are the primary source of reliable news for physical communities -- typically small towns and urban neighborhoods -- and for virtual ones -- groups of like-minded people who may be dispersed across great distances, but yet remain connected, largely through their local news outlet. Citizens and residents served by community journalism often know one another and more often know the journalists who cover them. It changes how you work, the phrases you use, your sense of both privacy and propriety when the subject of a story is apt to walk into the newsroom. Community journalists do not shy away from the tragedies and scandals and misfortunes that make up so much of metro journalism, but they do have a keen understanding of the human side of their stories.

Learning Outcomes
1. Report and write news, feature and other journalism stories for a community news outlet or platform
2. Demonstrate a keen understanding of the differences between community journalism and metropolitan or national journalism
3. Articulate community-building aspects of local journalism
4. Critique hyperlocal news websites
