Description
This course will address issues of representation on screen through specific examples drawn from documentary, drama-documentary and fiction genres and science-fiction fields.

Learning Outcomes
1. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the main tendencies in the representation of science and technology in screen media
2. Demonstrate a knowledge of semiotic applications in the representation of science and technology;
3. Analyse and explain the role of narrative structure and process in the representation of scientific issues;
4. Demonstrate a knowledge of links between art, science and cultures of display in contemporary practice

Indicative Content and Learning Activities
Key themes in representation of science and technology.
Concepts carried through the sessions include: rhetoric of the image, screen language, visual style, narrative structure and process, science fiction and utopianism. Central to the discussions will be the issue of how science [including technology; recurrent stereotypes such as the boffin, the alchemist, the heroic adventurer, the helpless genius] is mediated through popular media genres..
