The aim of the module is to introduce students to the necessary technical and creative skills required to produce original video material. The module is also designed to foster collaborative learning and to contextualize aspects of media theory taught in other modules.This module is delivered in two stages:(1) Introduction to digital video production and post-production techniques (8 weeks).(2) Introduction to digital audio post-production techniques (4 weeks). | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

|
1. Working in a small team be able to originate and prepare a digital video documentary proposal. 2. Organise, develop and produce a short five to seven minute video project on an agreed topic. 3. Compile the project into a logically edited sequence of events. 4. Introduction to digital video production.. Documentary production; developing your project. Students will be shown previous course work for evaluation and critical analysis.. Pre-production. Planning your project, research, brainstorming, developing a proposal, technical requirements and crew selection.. The small team environment - multi-skilling, roles and responsibilities.. Students will self-select their production groups and be required to originate and develop a number of project proposals, which they will research and evaluate.. The Non-Linear Editing (NLE) Software environment: 1. Introduction to the HD (High-Definition) software editing environment - Final Cut Pro (FCP), including: organising material, digitisation, creating bins, project files, working with different file formats.. The Non-Linear Editing (NLE) Software environment: 2. The FCP software system. Editing basics - editing clips, working in the Timeline, adjusting audio, linking audio and video files, the Toolbar, adding transitions, basic titles, working in the Canvas and Viewer windows, use of Markers. Exporting HD XDCAM files to the hard drive, to DVD and the Web.. Introduction to High Definition (HD) Camerawork.. The Sony XDCAM HD (High-Definition) camcorder. Technical operations; handling; focusing; audio adjustments; handheld vs. tripod use; monitoring audio levels; adjusting white balance. Digitisation of footage/data to Final Cut Pro.. Project proposal. Teams will have selected a sub-group of topics for discussion in consultation with their supervisor. Following this session, students will select their final project for development.. Project development. Carrying out a `recce.' - technical considerations, meeting people, organizing permissions; planning a shot list; scheduling the project.. Production. Project management, audio, lighting and camera considerations. Teams now start the production process and keep a log of their progress for later inclusion in their reports.. Post-production. Students involve themselves in the post-production process, creating a logical flow to their sequences of recorded material. Digitization, logging, editing considerations, adding narration, music, graphics, exporting and output for DVD and the web.. Audio Post-production. Introduction to the software environment, recording camera sound, cleaning up audio problems, creating a recording, sound effects as well as music/Foley work, effective sound management for camera on location and in the studio.. Submitting a report.. Generating a short report reflecting on the production process, explaining reasons for decisions made and recommending changes from lessons learnt.. Assignment 1. Project proposal (formative evaluation). Assignment 2. Digital Video (DV) documentary video project (summative evaluation).. Assessment Type. Group work (only).. General note.. As per 'Full-time Workload' description, students will be expected to continue their laboratory work with their own research and self-taught tutorial materials in order to increase their understanding and competencies within the various software and hardware environments.. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
