To develop an understanding of the basic concepts of chemistry, including the structure of atoms, electronic configuration, and orbital shapes. To understand the relationship between electronic configuration and chemical properties. To develop an appreciation of the chemical bond, both ionic and covalent. To understand basic equilibrium chemistry and the principle behind four main classes of reaction, e.g., acid-base, oxidation-reduction, compleximetric and precipitation reactions. 1. Derive the electronic structure of the elements 2. Predict the chemical and physical properties of the elements based on their position in the periodic table 3. Describe in terms of electronic structure the nature of the chemical bond 4. Carry out equilibrium chemistry calculations 5. Perform qualitative and quantitative analysis of physical changes occurring within gaseous reactants and thermochemical systems 6.
